Chignon Cap, Free Knitting Pattern
Materials Required:
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 61-D Nu-Ecru and No. 49-A Killarney.
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
1 yard of green grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.
GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 13 rows make 1 inch.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
CROWN ... Starting at outer edge with Nu-Ecru, cast on 133 sts. 1st and 2nd rows: K across. Drop Nu-Ecru, attach Killarney. 3rd row: With Killarney, * k 1, place thread in front of work, sl 1 as if to p, place thread at back of work. Repeat from * across, ending with k 1. 4th row (right side of work): * P 1, place thread in back of work, sl 1 as if to k, place thread in front of work. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1. Drop Killarney, pick up Nu-Ecru. 5th row: K across. 6th row (decreased row): K 10, * k 2 tog, k 20. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 11 (6 sts decreased). The last 6 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, decreasing 6 sts evenly across on every 6th row until 85 sts remain, being careful not to have decreases fall over previous decreases. Now dec 8 sts evenly spaced on every 6th row until 69 sts remain. Work 3 more rows in pattern. Next row: With Killarney, bind off.
BRIM ... With Killarney and right side of work facing, pick up and k around outer edge of crown 1 st in first st, * pick up and k 1 st in front and 1 st in back of next st, pick up and k 1 st in each of next 3 sts. Repeat from * across. Work in garter st (k each row) until 19 rows have been completed. Next row: K 1, * k 2 tog, k 3. Repeat from * across. Bind off. With right side facing, using Nu-Ecru and a crochet hook, work a row of sc along short ends of crown, omitting Brim. Turn. Next row: Sl st in each sc across. Break off. Work along opposite edge to correspond. Fold Brim in half to wrong side and sew in place.
Press Hat through a damp cloth, shaping Brim as desired. Turn back each end of Brim at back of Hat and sew in place. Cut ribbon in 4 equal parts. Sew 1 piece to each end of Brim at back opening and at top of Crown. Tie as illustrated.
