Angora Cap, Free Crochet Pattern

Angora Cap Crochet Pattern

Materials Required:

FUZZY WUZZY ANGORA. 3 - ½ oz. balls. (5 balls will make 2 caps).

One No.1 Steel Crochet Hook (American Gauge).

30 ins. Millinery Wire.

2 Pearl Drops, 1 Pearl Bead and 9 Seed Beads.

One Beading Needle.

2/3 yd. Grosgrain Ribbon, 1 inch wide.

HEAD SIZE: 22 ins.

Tension: 6 s.c. and 6 rows = 1 inch.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Ch. 4 sts. Join with s.s. (= slip stitch) to form ring.

1st round: 6 s.c. in ring.

2nd round: * 1.s.c. in 1.s.c. of previous round. 1.d.c. in ring. Repeat from * 5 times. (6 d.c. (post sts.) and 6 s.c. in round).

3rd round: * 1.s.c. in 1.s.c. of previous round. 1.s.c. in the top of 1.d.c. of previous round as usual. W.o.h. (= Wool over hook). Insert hook from right to left underneath same d.c. (W.o.h. and draw through 2 loops) twice. (Thus making a d.c. around a post st. and thus inc. 1. st.). Repeat from * to end of round. (6 post sts. in round with 2 s.c. between).

4th round: * 1.s.c. in each of next 2 s.c. 1.s.c. in the top of 1.d.c. 1.d.c. around the post st. Repeat from * to end of round. (6 post sts. in round with 3 s.c. between). Continue in this manner having 1. st. extra between the post sts. every round until there are 20 s.c. between the post sts. in each of the 6 sections. Work now measures approx. 3¼ ins. from the centre to outside edge and approx. 21 ins. around the outside edge. Check these measurements carefully to attain satisfactory size when finished.

Next round: * Miss 1.s.c. 1.s.c. in each of next 19 s.c. then 1.s.c. in top of next d.c. 1.d.c. around the post st. Repeat from * to end of round. (an even round, 6 post sts. with 20 s.c. between).

Repeat last round until work measures 5½ ins. from centre ending with the s.c. in top of the d.c. Proceed:--

To make peak: 1st row: (2 s.c. in next st. 1.s.c. in next st.) 10 times. (30 s.c. in row). Turn.

2nd row: Working through front loop of each st. of previous row, work 1.s.s. in 2nd st. and each of remaining 28 sts. of peak. 1.s.c. in each of next 2 sts. of crown. Turn.

3rd row: Inserting the hook from front to back of work under the loop of the s.c. of 2nd row below, work 1.s.c. in each of the 32 peak sts. then 1.s.c. in each of next 2 sts. of crown. (Working in this manner over the s.s. rows will make a padded peak). Turn.

4th row: Working through front loop of each st. of previous row, work 1.s.s. in each of the peak sts. then 1.s.c. in each of next 2 sts. of crown. Turn.

5th row: Working in s.c. as given on 3rd row, work 1.s.c. in each of the peak sts. then 1.s.c. in each of next 2 sts. of crown.

Repeat 4th and 5th rows twice, then 4th row once.

11th row: As 5th row, work 2.s.c. in every 7th st. Repeat 4th and 5th rows 6 times. Break Angora. Fasten off.

Cut a length of wire 18 ins. long.

With right side of work facing, join Angora to peak sts. and working over the wire and through both loops of the s.c. of previous row, work 2 s.c. in each s.c. to end of peak. Fasten off.

Turn ends of wire under for approx. 1 inch and sew firmly along the last row of s.c. of peak.

Allowing ½ inch each end for seam, cut ribbon to desired head size and sew in position along last round of crown.

To make trimming: Cut a piece of wire 41¾ ins. long and another piece 6½ ins. long. Wrap each piece evenly with angora, fastening in ends securely. Make one bend in the shorter piece and two in the longer piece and sew the shorter piece to the longer piece approx. 2 ins. from one end as illustrated.

Fasten in a piece of sewing thread to end of one loop and onto it thread 3 seed beads, 1 pearl drop and 1 seed bead. Pass the needle up through the pearl, then through the 3 beads and fasten off securely. Sew other pearl drop in position in same manner then the pearl bead on last end using 1 bead, 1 pearl and 1 bead.
