Original published in 1935, The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book gives the correct recipes for five hundred cocktails and mixed drinks known and served at the world's most famous Brass Rail before Prohibition, together with more than one hundred established formulas for cocktails and other beverages, originated while Prohibition was in effect. The amazing collection of recipes is based on the actual bar manual of the legendary Waldorf-Astoria bar which was a favorite haunt of many of the financial elite of the New York City from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel's inception in 1893, such as Diamond Jim Brady, Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat Masterson. A number of cocktails were invented at the bar, including the Rob Roy (1894) and the Bobbie Burns.

This book is a must-read if you are interested in classic, old-school cocktails of American bartending. It contains not only great recipes but also anecdotes going alongside the specific drinks as well as cocktail history in general that would make great cocktail conversations.

Testimonials:

"Of making bar books there is no end, and the best conceivable is 'The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book.' Here we have recipes for more than 500 cocktails and appetizers proved, and in many cases invented at the big brass rail of the original Waldorf... He has added to this imposing list of formulas a number of recipes for standard cocktails and mixed drinks, mostly gathered outside of the United States. His unrivaled manual is agreeably supplemented by chapters written in the spirit of a historian and a connoisseur... A well-made book and encyclopedic in its field." -- Sidney Williams, in the Philadelphia Inquirer

"Mixers' guides have been compiled, with the aid of good bartenders, by all the leading gin, whiskey, rum, vermouth, aperitif, and liquor firms. The most complete manual ever gotten together -- a tome too big for your pocket and costing full bookstore price, but worth it -- is 'The Old Waldorf Bar Book.'" -- Lawton Mackall, in the November, 1935, Esquire

"Seasonable and wise... Crockett's book is keen for setting things right... Something more than merely a sort of cook book for the tippler in the home. It is one man's history of noble drinking and offers 500 noble experiments to the adventurous. It offers them with a cheerful 'Here's How' and a sage admonition concerning the dynamic qualities of each with a view to aiding in the keeping of one's head within reason. Nostalgically it breathes the spirit of a time when a drunk was a souse and not the life of the party." -- George Currie, in Brooklyn Eagle

"While primarily, a manual of dependable recipes for a large variety of mixed drinks, its chief interest for a mass of readers will lie in the reminiscent notes and anecdotes concerning the 'old days.'" -- Hartford Courant

"Ranges as far as Cuban concoctions and Jamaican jollifiers. Some of the mixed drinks it records constitute a marvelous medley." -- Saturday Review of Literature
