Originally published in 1957, Clay and Glazes for the Potter by Daniel Rhodes is a classic textbook for the potter, student, teacher, designer, collector, or industrial ceramist who wishes to know more about the materials of the craft of pottery and the ways in which the many varied colors and textures in ceramics can be achieved. It is a practical book, and for the first time the facts about clays and glazes and the principles governing their use are clearly described in complete and easy-to-understand form.

The origins of clay are discussed, and methods are given for blending various clays to get the desired results in the finished piece. The characteristics and ceramic uses of the various kinds of clays are described, and numerous recipes for earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain bodies are included, together with methods for mixing, additions for different textures, and suggested firing techniques. The author also tells where to find and how to test usable native clays.

The ingredients of glazes and the methods of glaze calculation are fully described. Complete information is given on the methods of coloring, blending, testing, applying, and firing glazes. A section on reduction firing tells the complete story of reduction glazes and colors, how to manage the kiln for reduction effects, and how to achieve unusual glazes and colors such as copper-red, celadon, crystalline effects, and ash glazes.

In the appendix, the author presents over thirty glaze recipes designed for various temperatures and effects. The book, which is illustrated with pottery by the author and with examples from some of the great ceramic periods of the past, is written in a straightforward style which presents the material in simple, nontechnical language.
