By devoting an hour or two each day to a small flock of chickens, all the family's eggs and a large portion of the meat required for home use can be produced in less space than that needed for a backyard garden. From your own flock these foods -- eggs and meat -- will be available every month in the year.

Originally published in the 1940s, this book has been written to meet the needs of such poultry producers. It is addressed to small-flock owners. It recognizes the limited time and space available for the enterprise; it presumes that the typical investment will be small and that economy in management is a universal interest. Because land is restricted to a few square feet in the backyards, it emphasizes confinement methods. Feed, for the most part, will be purchased ready-mixed from local dealers. Every effort is made to point out labor-saving procedures.

Raising chickens to supply home-food needs embraces two major projects: (1) brooding young chickens for broilers and fryers, and (2) maintaining a flock of pullets or hens for eggs and meat. These are separate enterprises; one or both may be included in the production program of an individual. These projects have been developed fully. In both, every job involved and every decision which must be made are presented in the sequence in which they will be encountered by the producer.

House plans for laying flocks varying in size from 4 to 24 hens have been chosen from hundreds recommended by poultry departments of state agricultural colleges. Emphasis is placed upon keeping the flock in a healthy condition; directions for controlling parasites and diseases are specific. Helpful how-to-do drawings illustrate every technical problem incident to poultry production on a small scale. For beginners as well as those with some experience, it is hoped that this book will answer all vital questions concerned with producing chickens and eggs for home use.
